Marines with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, competed in a seven-event platoon challenge at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Oct. 27, 2016.
“We conducted our 4th Raider event,” said Staff Sgt. Richard Hernandez, an infantry unit leader with the unit. “The purpose of this event was to determine which platoon had the ability to work as one unit and push through the adversity of each obstacle over the course of seven events.”
Three platoons tackled the challenging events, including an obstacle course and a 200 meter log flip, testing the platoon’s ability to work together and push one another as each group competed for time.
“This was to build unit cohesion and morale,” said Sgt. Jason Hasch, a platoon sergeant with 1st Platoon, Golf Company. “That’s what we do with these raider events. They’re usually long and strenuous on the body.”
Stretching about nine miles, the event evaluated small unit leadership through each of the physically demanding stations and challenged Marines to motivate and help each other complete the task.
“[The Marines] worked well. They pushed each other, motivated each other and we even had leadership go behind and help Marines that were falling back move up,” said Hernandez. “When they finished, they finished together.”
The event helped small unit leaders understand the capabilities and limitations of their Marines and how to improve for upcoming challenges they may face as a platoon.
“This is pretty much what we need to be doing all of the time,” said Hasch. “We have to be physically fit to take those objectives on a real life battlefield, this is a very strenuous job and we can’t complete a mission if we’re not physically fit.”
