The 179th Airlift Wing (AW) and 200th Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineer (RED HORSE) Annual Awards Banquet was held Saturday at the R&L Banquet Center in Mansfield, Ohio.

This was a historic event, as the 200th RED HORSE, Camp Perry and Detachment 1 in Mansfield, joined the 179th AW awards banquet for the first time.

The event began with the presentation of the Colors by the 179th AW Honor Guard followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Senior Master Sgt. Rebecca Shell.

Out of the nearly 350 in attendance, the most distinguished guests were Timothy L. Theaker, the mayor of Mansfield; Leah Jones, a representative from U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown’s office; Sheila Larson, the widow of Brig. Gen. Fred N. Larson, a former commander of the 179th AW; Brig. Gen. Gregory N. Schnulo, the Assistant Adjutant General for the Ohio Air National Guard; retired Chief Master Sgt. William Kohler, a former 179th command chief; and Master Sgt. Michael Schafer, from the Ohio Enlisted Association.

After the introduction of the distinguished guests and the POW/MIA table presentation, the Masters of Ceremonies led a toast.

The Masters of Ceremonies for the evening were the 179th Command Chief Master Sgt. Tom Jones and 200th RED HORSE Chief Master Sgt. Troy Siebenaler.

Jones said he was pleased to add the 200th RED HORSE as part of this year’s banquet.

“I’ve been a member of this unit since 1984,” said Jones. “One of the things I’ve always loved about this unit is the positive attitudes, it’s a fun place to come to work.”

Jones spoke of the era of the C-130H Hercules departure in 2010 being around the same time that the 200th RED HORSE added a detachment in Mansfield and how many of the 179th AW members joined the new detachment at that time.

“What I see today, is that we carry on that tradition,” said Jones. “We feed back and forth now between the three units in Camp Perry and Mansfield, that same attitude and teamwork spirit resides in all three of our units.”

Then, the presentation of the awards began. There were several awards presented at the banquet including Airman of the Year, Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Company Grade Officer of the Year, First Sergeant of the Year, Honor Guard Member of the Year and the Minuteman Award.

The first award presented was the Minuteman Award to Lt. Col. Amy Whitehead. The Minuteman Award was created by the wing’s former Command Chief Master Sgt. Kohler, to honor those who work behind the scenes and go above and beyond in their jobs but don't normally get nominated in the other categories. It was originally made for enlisted members but then was extended to commissioned officers and civilians in recognition of all of the behind the scenes contributions they make.

The Honor Guard Member of the Year was presented to Staff Sgt. Alan Haddad. The other nominees were Staff Sgt. Kurt Dieringer and Senior Airman Joshua Prater.

Senior Airman Brontee Jeffries won the 179th AW Airman of the Year. Other nominees were Staff Sgt. Jason Allen, Senior Airman Arsenio Hernandez, Senior Airman Ryan McDivitt, Staff Sgt. Celita Noce, Senior Airman Andrew Pavell, and Senior Airman Heather Stoffer.

The 200th RED HORSE Airman of the Year was given to Airman 1st Class Paul Staton. The other nominee for this award was Staff Sgt. Jason Dudash.
The 179th AW Noncommissioned Officer of the Year was awarded to Tech. Sgt. Sabrina Roberts. The other nominees in this category were Staff Sgt. Todd Canaday, Tech. Sgt. Lincoln Clark III, Staff Sgt. Eric Cook, Staff Sgt. Scott Leffel, Tech. Sgt. Natalie McGhee and Tech. Sgt. Cashay Moorer.

The 200th RED HORSE Noncommissioned Officer of the Year was received by Tech. Sgt. Hayley Young. Staff Sgt. Brian Stein was the other nominee for the award.

179th AW Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year went to Master Sgt. Robert Rogers. The other nominees were Master Sgt. Randy Crouse, Senior Master Sgt. Amy McNary, Master Sgt. Rebecca Neuenschwander, Senior Master Sgt. Chad Shifflet and Master Sgt. Efrem Swoope.

200th RED HORSE Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year was presented to Senior Master Sgt. Joseph Enderle. Master Sgt. Robert Comer was the other nominee in this category.

Capt. Zachary R. Davis received the 179th AW Company Grade Officer of the Year. Other nominees for this award were Capt. Eric Craft, 1st Lt. Timothy Gribble, Capt. Lucas Kanavel and Capt. Jimmy Stringer III.

The 200th RED HORSE Company Grade Officer of the Year was presented to 1st Lt. Ashley Klase.

The 179th First Sergeant of the Year went to Master Sgt. James Perry. The other nominee in this category was Senior Master Sgt. Charles Danchik.

The recipients of these awards were chosen based on categories like leadership and job performance, significant self-improvement, as well as base and community involvement.

“When you talk about leadership, a lot of times people think of leadership as rank,” said Col. Jim Camp, the 179th Airlift Wing Commander. “Leadership is what you do when nobody is watching. Leadership is what you do when you are accountable for your own actions.”

All of the recipients will go on to represent the 179th AW and 200th RED HORSE at the state-level banquet in January. The winners of state-level awards will then move on to the national level.

Congratulations to all the Airmen that were nominated this year. It is a great accomplishment to even be eligible for these awards. Also, congratulations to all the Airmen that received awards tonight and best of luck as they move on to the next level.
