CIWT Site Fort Meade Volunteers at Food Bank

FORT MEADE, Md. -- Sailors assigned to Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) Site Fort Meade participated in a community service event at the Maryland Food Bank in Baltimore, Oct. 20.

The volunteer event was organized by Petty Officer 1st Class Jennifer Wonch as a chance to build morale and teamwork among the Sailors at CIWT Site Fort Meade, while working with an organization that provides so much good for members of the local community in the Baltimore area.

"It's such a great opportunity for our students and staff to come out and give back to our community," said Wonch, lead Apprentice Cryptologic Language Program instructor.

The Maryland Food Bank is a non-profit organization, seeking to end hunger throughout Maryland. The food bank distributes more than 120,000 meals per day adding up to nearly 44 million meals annually.

According to Thomas Higdon, the Maryland Food Bank's volunteer program manager, organizational efforts like those of CIWT Site Fort Meade's Sailors are crucial to the success of these programs.

"The work that the Maryland Food Bank does on a daily basis would not be possible without the help of our local volunteers," said Higdon.

While at the Maryland Food Bank warehouse, three students and three staff members dedicated three hours to sorting and packing over 1,500 pounds of food into boxes, which will be shipped to families in need across Maryland.

"I really enjoy volunteering at events like these, because they really help put things into perspective and give everyone a better understanding and appreciation for things that we take for granted every day," said Chief Petty Officer Jonathan Koscianski.

CIWT, with headquarters at Naval Air Station Pensacola Corry Station, delivers information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services, enabling optimal performance of information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
