The Hispanic Heritage Committee hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness 5 km run Oct. 8, 2016, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.
One hundred and two participants ran five km around the base in support of breast cancer awareness, starting and ending near the tennis courts at the Southside Fitness Center.
“I know people that I am close to who’ve survived breast cancer, so planning the event had a lot of meaning for me,” said Senior Airman Rosa Arreola, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron, equipment journeyman.
Hispanic Heritage Observance month is Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is Oct. 1 to 30.
“The 15 day overlap was the perfect opportunity to bring people together for the representation of these two observances at once,” said Tech Sgt. Antonio Oquendo 86th Vehicle Readiness vehicle management NCO in charge.
The Hispanic Heritage Committee works with the professional development and community involvement of their members throughout the year. This 5 km run event was the fourth event for the month.
"Completing the 5 km run is just another way to demonstrate that I recognize that every day someone is suffering from breast cancer and that I support them during their time of struggle,” said Staff Sgt. Spencer Wallace, 435th Security Forces Squadron training operations NCO in charge and Breast Cancer Awareness 5 km participant. “It is a humbling experience to be fortunate to participate in a 5 km (run) to bring awareness to everyone about breast cancer."
In addition to the 120 runners, 40 people volunteered for the event, ensuring the safety of participants.
