The 28th annual Hispanic Engineering National Achievement Awards Conference kicked off Oct. 6, 2016. For the first time, GMiS partnered with the Latinos in Science and Engineering organization, MAES, the Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions, for one unified conference.
HENAAC is a three-day-long conference held to identify, honor and document the contributions of outstanding Hispanic STEM students and professionals. Representatives from the United States Marine Corps attended the conference to support diversity as well as interact with, engage, mentor, coach and honor over 3,000 students who have shown outstanding education and leadership qualities within the Latino community across the country.
This year’s theme for the HENAAC was “Excellence through Diversity.” The Marine Corps is devoted to finding the individuals with not only the highest mental, moral, and physical caliber, but also those who will strengthen the Corps’ cultural expertise, language skill sets and other operational requirements.
“We reach individuals who aren’t typically reached and we do that through billboards and commercials, and we meet with these demographics at conferences and events,” said Master Sgt. Damian Cason, Diversity Chief, Marine Corps Recruiting Command.
The students at the conference were allotted the opportunity to network and interview with several companies working in the STEM community, to include the Marine Corps. Career Recruiters and Recruiting Support Officers were among the Marines attending the HENAAC to get the chance to meet with the young men and women who are looking for their next step after graduating from college.
“If we attend events like this we are finding the more prepared students to take on the challenge of leading the next generation of Marines,” said Cason.
Along with networking, students were given the chance to demonstrate their engineering skills at the HENAAC College Bowl. Students were drafted by different companies attending the conference to compete on a team against other students for a scholarship prize.
The Marine Corps College Bowl team was led and coached by Capt. Evita Mosqueda-Chapman and Capt. Chris Tamayo, both Recruiting Support Officers. The dynamic duo mentored 11 students throughout the competition, teaching them not only about the Marine Corps but also life lessons.
“I’ve never been exposed to this kind of environment,” said Ignacio Sanchez, a mechanical engineering major at Sacramento State University and member of Team Marine for the College Bowl. “The Marines have taught us how to become extremely proficient and new ways to lead.”
The GMiS gives the Marine Corps the opportunity to engage well-rounded college scholars while promoting core values and encouraging future success no matter the path the student chooses to take.
