The 50th Space Wing earned a unit effectiveness inspection rating of “Effective,” following a weeklong capstone evaluation, including eight previous visits in the last two years, the most in Air Force Space Command.
Although the rating is notable, the wing’s 20 Professional Performers, 12 Professional Teams, as well as the AFSPC Inspector General’s reviews are nothing to sneeze at.
“I am so proud of you,” said Col. DeAnna Burt, 50 SW commander, when she addressed the wing during a commander’s call Sept. 26 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado.
Team 5-0 is only the third AFSPC wing to be examined under the new three-tier Air Force Inspection System’s UEI, an external evaluation of the wing performance based on the four major graded areas. These areas: managing resources, improving the unit, leading people and executing the mission, are further divided into sub-groups. Additionally, the UEI uses a three-tier system – outstanding, effective and ineffective – in rating the MGAs, sub-groups and the wing’s overall score.
“The UEI is important because it gives us a chance to gauge if we have any non-detected non-compliance in the wing. It is the way to validate that some of the changes we made are actually working,” said Lt. Col. Rickie Banister, 50 SW Inspector General.
Indeed, the AFSPC IG validated and praised the wing’s effectiveness.
“You are the only wing to have an ‘Outstanding’ in any of the subgroups. You are the only one of three wings to not have a single, not one, ineffective,” Burt emphasized. “When you are the most looked at wing in AFSPC, it means we opened ourselves up to potentially more write-ups, and you still crushed it. Be very proud of that.”
According to the AFSPC IG report, Team 5-0 showed a strong sense of unit pride and the wing’s AFIS is alive and well.
“Don’t let the word ‘effective’ define you. What I would focus on is (what the AFSPC IG said),” Burt said. “The note they sent to (Gen. John Hyten, AFSPC commander), is we are very strong in taking on the hardest projects that the command has to offer, and slaying it.”
“It shows that we have very hard working men and women at the 50th,” Banister added. “They believe in doing the best they can to make this wing the best in space command.”
Even with these accolades, the wing is not resting on its laurels.
As part of the AFIS, the wing’s inspection cycle started Sept. 26 with the next UEI scheduled for 2018. With this in mind, the wing is already gearing up for its next exercise in October.
“This is a process. We are not taking a knee, we are not taking six months off and relaxing. We are going to go back into the process. That’s what makes us good at this. It’s not a prep for inspection, it’s a process,” Burt explained.
Additionally, AFSPC IG offered the wing areas for improvement. These include feedback, security, and how Airmen spend their time on both mission and base events. The wing also needs to improve on providing feedback and milestones for its Space Mission Force and Cyber Squadron Next programs. Other areas for improvement include a wing-wide Continuous Process Improvement and further use of Commander’s Inspection Management Board and Wing Inspection Team members.
Burt concluded the commander’s call with a push to keep driving.
“Keep doing what you’re doing—crushing the mission,” she said.
