SHREVEPORT, La. – The Camp Minden based Youth Challenge Program cadets were thrilled to spend a few hours with their families and friends during their recent Family Day on Saturday, June 14. The cadets are only allowed to see and visit family twice during their five-month cycle.
The Louisiana Youth Challenge Program is a multifaceted program that aims to help at-risk adolescents achieve their education goals and become more productive and responsible members of society. Teamwork, discipline, academic excellence and personal growth are emphasized in the program.
"This is the best program I have ever been affiliated with," said Stacy R. Landry of Lafayette La. and mother of YCP Cadet Christian P. Doll. "I have definitely seen a positive change in my son."
Also in attendance were troopers of the 2nd Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment of the 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Humvees and weapons were on display as well for the cadets and their families. Several of the troopers from the squadron also served as cadre for the YCP.
"I have been working here at YCP for two years and the feeling that I know I have made a difference in these children's lives is amazing. There is nothing I would rather be doing right now," says Staff Sgt. Chris L. Bowen of Shreveport, La.
