ISSONGO, Cameroon -- U.S. Service members recently completed a basic intelligence course Aug. 29-Sept. 9 at the Issongo Training Base, Cameroon.
This two week intelligence course is the first part of a ‘train-the-trainer’ curriculum being taught to Cameroonian Marines, Sailors, and Gendarmerie.
A joint instructor cadre from the U.S. Marine Corps Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force-Crisis Response-Africa, sailors from Combined Task Force-68, and a linguist from the USAF Language Enabled Airman Program focused on supporting the Cameroonian forces to increase their tactical intelligence collection capabilities and preparing the students to become future intelligence instructors.
The first week of training consisted of the U.S. team holding classroom instruction in basic intelligence skills, tactical site exploitation, and tactical questioning. The following week began with a comprehensive scenario that forced the students to perform all six steps of the intelligence cycle, and the week finished with students teaching back some of the key classes.
This type of intelligence training is vital in the fight against Boko Haram. “The tactical collections capabilities that TSE and TQ bring to the fight will allow the Cameroonians to better obtain vital information collected from the terrorist, always maintaining human rights and security requirements as both central to these efforts, said class leader, Capt. Zamba Guibava.
“This event has really laid the groundwork for future tactical intelligence-related events, from building relationships with senior Cameroonian officers to introducing the 'train-the-trainer' concept with Cameroon Marines,” said U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Oliver Talbott. “Future efforts in this lane will benefit both nations through increased security in both northern Cameroon and in the maritime security domain, and benefits our own Marines and sailors through joint activity while working with [partner nation] forces".
The joint U.S. team also took time to volunteer at the Saint Jean Deido Orphanage in Douala, Cameroon. Members of the team played soccer with the children, cooked lunch, and donated baby items, school supplies, soccer balls, and paint supplies.
