    59th Medical Wing

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – Deployment is a reality that affects virtually every career field in today’s Air Force, a reality Staff Sgt. Jessica Brazionis came face-to-face with when she received orders to deploy to Afghanistan for the second time.

Brazionis, a native of Portland, Oregon, and a member of the 59th Medical Support Squadron at the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, is currently serving as a medical information systems technician at Craig Joint Theater Hospital at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan.

The Craig Joint Theater Hospital operating room is the only role III hospital in the area of responsibility providing care for the 36,000 NATO and coalition forces across 21 forward operating bases.

“Our unit provides compassionate, trusted, and excellent role III combat medical support to U.S., coalition and Afghan security forces,” said Master Sgt. Dennis Harper, 455th EMDOS flight chief for medical support and NCO in charge, tactical operations center.

A role III hospital (BAF) has more surgical specialties and can take on more patients than a role II; in addition, BAF is the hub for aeromedical evacuation.

“It’s my job to provide information technician support for Craig Joint Theater Hospital ranging from routine fixes for basic computer applications to network hardware installations, providing connectivity for an array of medical applications,” said Brazionis.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to do things I wouldn’t normally do back home. From running cable through the hospital to degaussing hard drives, she is the subject matter expert in more than one area relating to her job,” she added.

Brazionis is self-motivated and a hard charger who consistently produces results, according to her supervisor.

“I provide IT technical support to 233 joint personnel. I’m responsible for computer software, hardware and network infrastructure repairs, ensuring the network and all components are available and secure,” Brazionis said.

On-call 24/7, Brazionis helps her customers provide world-class medical care. Her critical skillset is instrumental in the successful treatment of our U.S., coalition and Afghan forces, enabling the warfighters to return to the battlefield, Harper said.

Brazionis is on her second deployment to Bagram; she worked in patient administration on her first deployment.

“When she is not providing IT support, Brazionis is also our Patient Administration Division during mass casualty. With her experience from her previous deployment, she is able to step right in and provide leadership, guidance and PA expertise during two exercises and one real-world, resulting in the successful treatment of 39 patients in a short period of time,” Harper said.

“She performs at high levels while exhibiting professionalism and teamwork. She truly cares about the mission and the people, always planning morale events to help build camaraderie and boosts the spirits of her fellow Airmen,” he added.
