Command Sgt. Maj. John W. Troxell, senior enlisted advisor to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff visited Okinawa Aug. 29 to observe military installations and engage with service members.

Troxell, the most senior noncommissioned officer of the U.S. Armed Forces, serves as the principal military advisor to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs as well as the Secretary of Defense on all matters involving joint and combined total force integration, utilization, health of the force and joint development for enlisted personnel.

During his visit, Troxell spoke to service members on Kadena Air Base before traveling to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma to observe capabilities and visit with Marines.

“I am so impressed the motivation and flexibility in the younger Marines,” said Troxell. “The leader-to-subordinate relationship is strong, and there is a good flow of information which reflects in the Marines.”

While on MCAS Futenma, Troxell toured Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265, Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force’s hangar, where he observed a MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.

“I know that the Marines in Okinawa are ready, capable and focused for when the mission calls,” said Troxell.

Troxell visited with different work sections within the hangar, and engaged with Marines. He thanked them for their hard work by acknowledging them with a challenge coin, a small coin bearing an organization’s insignia rewarded as a military tradition.

Troxell was impressed with the high morale and capabilities of the service members on Okinawa, he said.

“We have great, engaged leadership here in Okinawa at all levels,” said Troxell. “Their leadership reflects in all (service members). They are focused, they are motivated and they are passionate. That is how it should be. ”
