    3ABCT CONDUCTS RETRANSMISSION

Communication at any level can be difficult even when it’s face-to-face, now add hundreds of miles and that can lead to disaster.

However, that won’t be a problem for the Soldiers of 3ABCT, 1AD, due to highly specialized communication Soldiers.

”The ability to effectively communicate is imperative for any operation,” said Capt. Seth Norton, communications officer, 3ABCT, 1AD. “The signal community delivers that ability to unit commanders, allowing them to control the battlefield.”

Aside from tactical radios, modern military capabilities in the field encompass Internet and satellite communications.

“A Soldier has to stay razor-sharp, stay updated and maintain those proficiencies,” he said. “And that’s a challenge.”

Unlike in the civilian world, Soldiers cannot rely on their cell phones to communicate.

Leaders use radio as the primary communication method between convoys and Tactical Operations Commands.

“If we lose the ability to disseminate information across the battlefield, we as communication specialist have failed, and have put our battle buddies at risk,” said Spc. Justine West, 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery, 3ABCT, 1AD.

It is imperative Soldiers conduct preventive maintenance checks and services, in accordance with Army doctrine.

"It is extremely important that the maintenance process is conducted thoroughly, taking the time to look in-depth," West stated. "Now is the time to identify any shortcomings and get the equipment fully mission capable.”

In a few weeks the brigade will conduct a command post exercise (CPX) to validate communications across the battlefield.
2nd Brigade Engineer Battalion is the brigade’s signal company and retains technical skills and equipment necessary to automate and transmit information between the brigade and allied forces through specialized teams.

"Charlie Company's readiness is extremely important to the brigade," West said. "They provide radio communication system capabilities, as well as voice and data services supporting the voice of command."

The readiness of Signal Corps Soldiers supports the brigade's overall readiness, ensuring the Soldiers and equipment are continuously prepared for increasing levels of mission command, from company level, up to division.
