Paratroopers with Battery C, 1st Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division- 1st platoon, 3rd section (Crazy Eight), prepare to provide counter fire on a simulated enemy with a towed M777A2 howitzer during the scenario-based Joint Readiness Training Exercise (JRTC) 16-09 near Geronimo Landing Zone on North Fort Polk, LA, August, 25.
These artillerymen came from a fire base about 500 meters away and were here to get six rounds fused and ready in an M777A2 towed howitzer in as little time as possible. 10 minutes or less is a combat pace and that's from the truck to 'ready-to-fire.'
The process went as follows:
The section chief gave the command, "prepare for action, gunner dismount."
At this time, the crew all jumped from the truck (literally), released the stabilizer arms and prepared to dig the spades into the ground.
Once completed, the artillerymen got the left and right limits of the shooting range and ensured there were no obstacles in the way.
In a real world situation, the chief would then send up a 'P' status: ready to fire and state their capabilities based on their position.
"We can talk through this all day, but until we actually get as close to the real world scenario as we can, we won't really gain that experience," said Sgt. Nassal Ricardo Braimbridge, gunner and Baltimore, MD native assigned to BTRY C, 1-319 FAR. "[JRTC] gives us real world training We're ready to go, proficient and well-trained."
