WASHINGTON -- During PCS season, service members deal with a number of stressful things. For those going overseas or family members with special medical and educational needs moving stateside, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling’s medical clinic is here to make the Family Member Relocation Clearance process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

The screening process helps to make sure the health, mental health and educational needs of family members will be met at the members new gaining command.

The process of dealing with all of the paperwork might seem daunting at first, but Air Force Lt. Col. David Gordon, chief of the medical staff, says it is an important step for families.

“It really has a huge impact on making sure the family members are taken care of, which frees up the minds of the active duty members,” he explained.

After a service member receives an assignment Report on Individual Personnel (RIP), they should contact the FMRC office to get started, said Senior Airman Shannon Ramsey, Family Member Relocation Clearance coordinator.

“I recommend they come in, so I can explain the process one-on-one,” she added. “Most of my success rate is from people coming in, sitting down, having all the paperwork on the table and then sorting everything out.”

Making sure they have Air Force form 1466 is a must, she said. Members need to have the 5-page form filled out correctly, so they don’t have any hangups along the way.

Rushing through and not getting all the necessary forms filled out correctly is the easiest way to get travel denied, said Gordon. That’s something that can be very frustrating for members.

The best way to make things easy for both the members and the staff is to get the process started as soon as possible.

“When people jump in early, it saves them a lot of stress,” he added. “So, come see us as soon as you have that RIP in hand and we can get the ball rolling.”

The office is open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second floor of the clinic in room 259. To schedule a meeting or for more information, call 202-404-3612 or email usaf.jbab.579-mdg.mbx.efmpm@mail.mil.
