FORT CARSON , COLORADO, UNITED STATES

Story by Sgt. 1st Class John Cortez

    4th Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade

Command Sgt. Maj. Terry Burton, U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center command sergeant major, visited Fort Carson, July 26, to discuss safety trends throughout the U.S. Army.

Burton’s day at Fort Carson started with physical readiness training with “Rough Riders” of the 4th Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade. Burton spent the rest of his morning receiving a command brief from Command Sgt. Maj. Jacinto Garza, 4SB, 4th Infantry Division senior enlisted leader.

“As a logistician I bring that expertise to the safety center,” said Burton, who joined the Army in 1989 as a light wheeled vehicle mechanic, told a room of 4SB senior noncommissioned officers as he offered advice for units preparing for a rotation at the National Training Center.
“Make sure your units are trained on risk management prior to departing for NTC. Units are arriving to California asking for training. Units should already be trained.”

Following the command brief, Burton toured 4SB’s Talent Management Room and Division Sustainment Operations Center (D-SOC). During the tour, Burton listened to NCOs as they discussed how 4SB supports Fort Carson and 4th Infantry Division on a daily basis.

“Command Sgt. Maj. Burton was able to receive an in depth tour of our Brigade and hear from the Strong Sergeants that support this installation every day,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Jacinto Garza, 4th Sustainment Brigade senior enlisted advisor, 4th Infantry Division. “In return he not only offered us advice on how to conduct safer operations, he also shared his experience from his last deployment, which was very valuable information as our Soldiers prepare for future operations overseas.”

Burton completed his tour with a brief on safety trends within the U.S. Army at McMahon Theater to NCOs from 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade and 4SB.

Throughout his brief, Burton emphasized the importance of risk management.

“Risk management is important at work, at home, and everywhere you go,” Burton said. “If you don’t practice risk management you could be the next person I’m discussing.”

Burton ended his session advising the audience to reach out to him if there are any questions regarding safety.

“If it’s dealing with safety, we (U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center) have data on it. Believe it or not we even have data on tents. We are a great resource for safety readiness,” Burton added.
