AL UDEID AIRBASE, Qatar – As the whistle blew, a Soldier lobbed a ball over the net. The opposing team tried to volley it back before it hit the water, but they were too late.
The Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade held a water volleyball tournament Aug. 12 at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar.
The battery used the pool to hold the physical training session to build esprit de corps and promote healthy competition within the unit.
“They came out to play water volleyball today,” said Sgt. 1st Class Nacy Turner, the Equal Opportunity Representative for the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade. “I think it was a great success because everyone had fun. There was a lot of team cohesion and it was something different from the regular PT sessions.”
The unit held special PT sessions before such as Cross-fit routines, dodgeball and relay races. But this is the first time the unit used a pool.
With a quick breakdown of the rules, the special staff section led by Turner, split the battery into teams and created a bracket.
As the teams played against each other, friendly banter towards the opposing teams motivated them to focus and work together. Shortly after starting, the teams were already trying to bump, set and spike the ball.
The longer the teams volleyed the ball back and forth, the more the Soldiers enjoyed the round. Once the ball hit the water, high-fives and cheers erupted on one side of the net and sighs of disappointment came from the other.
“The esprit de corps was very important,” said Sgt. Michael Cassias, a Kerrville, Texas native and command driver for the brigade. “Everybody played together, not only to just get the win but also to have fun with each other while we are deployed.”
