KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Stakeholders, customers and elected officials were guests of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District for the annual Missouri River Tour Aug. 16.
The purpose of the trip aboard the district’s barge is to provide a first-hand look at the Civil Works projects the district builds and maintains along the Missouri River and to receive questions and comments from stakeholders.
“A significant portion of the work the district does is on and along the Missouri River,” said Kansas City District Commander Colonel Doug Guttormsen. “It’s our job to keep the river open for business, recreation and navigation. As we execute these missions, we do that in collaboration with many different stakeholders and that is why events like the barge tour are so important. The spirit of the tour is to foster our partnerships, collaboration and communication with our stakeholders.”
This year’s barge tour travelled from Parkville, Mo. to Kaw Point, Kan., allowing guests to see flood control and navigation projects along that stretch of river.
About 90 guests attended the river tour this year. There were also subject matter experts from the Corps onboard to answer questions and address any concerns of the stakeholders, customers and elected officials about Corps projects along the river.
One of the primary purposes of the Missouri River mainstem Reservoir system is to reduce risk and damages from floods to people, homes, and businesses. The Corps remains committed to operating the river to serve the congressionally authorized project purposes and to balance the competing needs of the Missouri Basin.
