    Area Support Group - Qatar

CAMP AS SAYLIYA, QATAR – Setting sail may be an odd way to highlight recycling programs but in the spirit of the spirit of creativity and conservation, the soldiers made an effort not to sink in the attempt.
Eight teams of Soldiers came together to participate in a “Cardboard Regatta” on (date) sponsored by the Area Support Group-Qatar Morale Welfare and Recreation office.

The purpose of the event was to bring together the multiple tenant units stationed at ASG-QA, promote the recycling of materials, and have Soldiers effectively communicate and work together. The event took place at the Camp As Sayliyah pool, and the boats were constructed from cardboard found around the post. Rules stated the boats could only be constructed of cardboard, they could only use tape to meld the pieces together, and could not use the tape as a primary sealant for the ship.

“Events like the cardboard boat regatta allow us to build teams within the organization but outside of the daily office grind,” said Maj. Mark Winker, the executive officer of Area Support Group-Qatar, “We are fortunate to have a chain of command that supports these activities and promotes an environment of teamwork.”

The “Cardboard Regatta” is one of many events that the Morale Welfare and Recreation office creates in order to lift the spirits of both Soldiers and civilians stationed at Camp As Sayliyah.

“These events are incredibly important while in a deployed setting. It is not just for the sake of MWR and keeping folks in good spirits but it allows units across the installation to really come together and get to know each other,´ said Staff Sgt. James Stibbe, a victim advocate for ASG-QA “We have approximately 23 units floating around here but normally you would only interact with 3-4 of them. By doing this we get to bond with a lot of people that we normally would just say hello to in passing not even knowing who they are with which really helps bring the entire CAS family together.”
The event, though well attended, always has room for more participation, said post officials.

“I urge all of our Solders, civilians and command sponsored families to participate in our MWR activities,” said Winker. “They provide a fun, safe and relaxed venue to build relationships and make the best of your time while assigned to Camp As Sayliyah.”
