Parents and children from the Marine Corps Installation East community gathered to celebrate the end of the summer and the start of a new school year with the annual Kids’ Day event on Marine Corps Air Station New River, Aug. 9.
"This was an excellent opportunity for the community to get together to get to know each other," said Larraine Reimer, supervisory recreation specialist at the Tarawa Terrace community center. "The running theme behind the event was school related activities that got the kids excited and ready to start a fresh school year."
Activities for the children included bounce houses, football and baseball tosses, kids dance party area, and display tables that allowed them to try new and different types of food.
"I think everyone appreciated the event and the giveaways for the kids that were useful, and it promotes excitement about going back to school," said Reimer. "Hearing that kind of response from the patrons and hearing the feedback about the variety of activities for the kids really help us in understanding why they want to come out to events like this."
Hundreds of active duty service members and their children attended the event and got involved in the multiple activities that the event offered.
"If they’re having fun, and they see their kids having fun," said Reimer, "it’s a great event and ultimately, the way we gauge our success is by seeing faces that are familiar and come back and visit our events. I think that with the support from the Single Marine Program, Marine Family Team Building and great volunteers, this is one of those events that we definitely will hold again next year."
