FORT IRWIN, CALIF. – The humming of generators and military vehicles can be heard throughout the Rotational Unit Bivouac Area (RUBA) as soldiers assigned to the 630th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion build their “combat power” while preparing to occupy and defend Forward Operating Base Logistics Support Area Santa Fe, here, during the Reception Staging Onward Integration phase (RSOI) of the 16-07 National Training Center (NTC) rotation from June 6 to 9, 2016.

The NTC is a training facility that creates realistic combat scenarios during a 14-day period where soldiers go “in the box” to conduct combat and sustainment operations. The RSOI is a four-day phase prior to the box requiring soldiers to draw mission specific transportation vehicles, weapons, ammunition and install Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES). MILES is a training device that provides tactical engagement simulation for direct fire force-on-force training using eye safe laser "bullets".

“When I say building combat power, your building all those systems and putting everything together to conduct combat operations and mission support,” said Master Sgt. Brian Simmons, the 630th CSSB operations noncommissioned officer in charge. “Our main focus and our main fight is supporting the warfighter for sustainment operations and everything they need to fight the battle.”

Minnesota National Guard soldiers assigned to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division act as the warfighter supporting the 52nd Infantry Division while conducting combat operations to support the international response to Donovia’s unlawful aggression during the exercise. The 630th Support Operations (SPO) section plays a vital role in transporting sustainment essential items ensuring the 1/34 ABCT stays in the “fight”.

“The SPO is in control of tracking all of the classes of supply that are being moved on the battlefield,” said Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Boyles, the support operations noncommissioned officer in charge. “Our job is to receive different TMRs (transportation movement requests) from higher of what the combat team needs. From there, we break out how much commodities they need and we track how many trucks, pax (personnel) count and what company is best suited to move those specific commodities.”

Once the 630th CSSB reaches 100 percent they will tactically convoy all equipment to Logistics Support Area Santa Fe where they will be evaluated by Observer Controllers assigned to the 916th Sustainment Brigade. The OC's critique how well the 630th CSSB receives TMRs from the 1/34 ABCT and support those requests during the different training scenarios.

“I have been with the battalion for over 16 years, and I have been on a lot of annual training events,” said Boyles. “In my personal opinion I have seen this battalion do great wonderful things. We are like any unit, we have hiccups along the way, but we always succeed.”

The 1452nd Combat Heavy Equipment Transportation Company, a subordinate unit assigned to the 630th CSSB, is responsible for moving over 300 pieces of equipment. The 1454th Transportation Company, also assigned to the 630th CSSB will provide security for over 400 soldiers during the tactical movement to LSA Santa Fe. Once the battalion reaches Santa Fe, their next mission will be to establish base defense while continuing to conduct sustainment operations supporting the 1/34 ABCT in over 100 degree heat.

“They fight the forward battle, we fight the rear battle,” said Simmons.
