LENOIR, N.C. – The anticipation builds as soldiers assigned to the 630th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion load their gear onto buses en route to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California for the NTC rotation 16-07 on June 4, 2016.

The NTC is a training facility designed to simulate real-life combat scenarios testing warriors’ readiness utilizing their military occupational specialty in a high-up-tempo environment. Soldiers are also battling heat conditions of over 100 degrees while providing tactical care in these combat situations.

“I’m a little nervous, so are most of the people here,” said Sgt. Jonathan Scarberry, a 630th CSSB paralegal noncommissioned officer. “I’m ready to get it started.”

National Guard units operate on an Army Force Generation (ARFOGEN) cycle, which is a structured progression of unit readiness over time to produce trained, ready, and cohesive units for operational deployments. This is the Army’s core process for force generation, which cycles units through three force pools: reset, train/ready and available. The 630th CSSB is in the train/ready pool.

“They (soldiers) will find out that their job does matter, because I think sometimes in the National Guard we don’t have the opportunity to work in our Military Occupational Specialty,” said Sgt. 1st. Class William Brown, the 630th Headquarters and Headquarters Company first sergeant. “I think they will have that opportunity to actually do their jobs and see where it fits in to the grand scheme of things.”

The 630th CSSB’s mission is to provide and maintain support operations to the 626th maintenance company, the 1454th Transportation Company, and the 1452nd Heavy Equipment Transportation Company along with other reserve and guard components. This promotes the opportunity of units cultivating relationships with other units from different parts of the Nation.

“I think that this rotation is pretty unique, because it’s almost entirely a reserve component rotation,” said Lt. Col. Troy Holowiti, the 630th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion commander. “It’s a big time for the National Guard and the Reserves to come together and enjoy a great rotation, fight the fight with the OP-4 and just show what we are capable of doing.”
