Frank Cable’s visit to Goa is aimed at building friendship and goodwill between the U.S. Navy and the people of India.

COMREL projects are organized in various ports to get Sailors involved with a good cause and to interact with the community. At this event, Sailors spent their time entertaining children with information about the ship, games and songs at Bal Bhavan, which serves as a complementary institution to regular schools, and provides alternate education and skills to a large number of rural as well as underprivileged children.

“COMRELs are important to Sailors because it allows them to be immersed in a different culture with different priorities, history, traditions and ideals,” said Lt. Nathanael Gentilhomme, Frank Cable's chaplain. “Further, it takes them away from the normal work of everyday life. Especially when Sailors get to work with children, it gives them an opportunity to practice being a positive mentor and role model for younger generations to follow.”

Sailors take away many different things from these community relation events.

“After participating in the COMREL, it made me realize how important programs like these are to children in other countries and our own,” said Machinery Repairman 2nd Class Bryan Dixon, a native of New Meadows, Idaho. “I have not had the chance to go to a COMREL involving children before it was a big life changing experience for me.”

USS Frank Cable is one of two forward-deployed submarine tenders and is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to conduct maintenance and support of deployed U.S. naval force submarines and surface vessels in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
