A native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Hamilton is currently deployed to the 455th Expeditionary Medical Operations Squadron at Bagram Air Field.
“I’m responsible for assessing and controlling the health risks of Airmen at Bagram Air Field and Kandahar Air Field as well,” he said.
Members of the 455th EMDOS perform workplace health risk assessments, occupational health evaluations and the U.S. Forces-Afghanistan radiation safety job.
“I assess the workplace and identify and evaluate deployment-specific exposures. These exposures can include radiofrequency radiation, flightline noise, thermal stress and hydrazine,” Hamilton said.
In addition to assessing workplaces, he also works in conjunction with the Army Preventive Medicine team on issues concerning environmental and indoor air quality.
“By conducting these assessments, I ensure that identified exposures are documented for the member’s long-term health surveillance. Sometimes I need to evaluate and quantify these exposures by conducting special surveys such as air sampling for chemical concerns and sound level surveys for noise concerns,” he said.
Hamilton is learning more about the intricacies of joint mission operations and the En-Route Patient Staging System.
“I have been fortunate enough to learn how important their role is by assisting with multiple missions to ensure our military brothers and sisters are transported to higher echelons of medical care. That kind of hands-on education, to me, is priceless and an absolute honor. I definitely thank our ERPSS members here for affording me that experience,” he said.
On his second deployment – his first deployment was to Kirkuk, Iraq – Hamilton plays an important role, according to his supervisor.
“He is hard charging, giving maximum effort in all he does supporting ever-changing, day-to-day missions,” said Capt. Tim Batten, 455th EMDOS bioenvironmental engineer. “He’s the hands-on force multiplier that keeps 9,800 military members safe from both chemical and physical hazards.
“He is the backbone of the health risk surveillance efforts in Afghanistan, someone new Airmen can emulate and any commander would be proud to have on their team,” Batten added.
