The 7203rd Medical Support Unit transferred authority of the Soldier Resilience and Readiness Center to the 7223rd Medical Support Unit during a ceremony at the Fort Bliss and Old Ironsides Museum July 8. After completing a year-long mission providing health service support and readiness services to Soldiers, civilians and other military services, the 62 Soldiers of the 7203rd MSU will complete the demobilization process before returning to their respective home of records throughout the Midwest.

“The 7203rd MSU medically processed over 60,000 individuals through the SRRC,” said Col. John A Smyrski, commander, William Beaumont Army Medical Center. “I am going to say that again – 60,000 encounters over the course of a year. That is truly amazing. Additionally, they processed over 13,000 through the dental clinic.”

The 7203rd MSU, an Army Reserve unit from Hobart, Indiana, provided a full array of medical services including medical record review, immunizations, hearing and vision exams, dental processing, medical screening and examinations and behavioral health services.

“The mission went very, very well. I am very proud of the Soldiers in my unit who have really contributed, stepped up and did a very good job,” said Lt. Col. Michael Carroll, commander, 7203rd MSU. “This is a very interesting mission. There’s a lot of coordination … dealing with so many different enterprise partners on Fort Bliss, but everyone works together doing their own piece of the mission.”

The primary customers at the SRRC are National Guard and Reservists, Airmen, Sailors and CONUS Replacement Center personnel, which includes civilians and individual augmentees, who must complete a mobilization and redeployment medical process at the SRRC. Active duty units also complete readiness, which includes validations of their medical readiness to deploy.

In addition to the mission they inherited, the 7203rd was responsible for implementing the Separation Health Physical Exam or SHAPE, a comprehensive medical evaluation of all combo 2 and combo 3 Soldiers (National Guard and Reservists) into the demobilization process.

“(SHAPE) is my biggest pride and joy because we got that program off the ground and its running smoothly,” Carroll said. “It’s one thing to take over a program and make adjustments, fine tune it, but when you are starting up, you have no data to go on … that was the most challenging part.”

The 7203rd worked with the WBAMC command team, regional health command, Mobilization and Deployment staff, and others to stand up SHAPE, provide staff and iron out the day-to-day specifics of the program, all while staying within a 14-day demobilization timeline.

In addition to the mission, many Soldiers in the 7203rd MSU took part in a variety of activities such as improving physical fitness, intramural sports, volunteering and team building events.

“We also participated in many sports and races,” said Capt. Yolanda Arce, optometrist and unit fund manager, 7203rd MSU. “We had people run numerous 5Ks, even Soldiers placing in races. We had a soccer team, volleyball team, softball team, basketball team, and all these participating in different tournaments.”

“We had 100 percent pass in the Army Physical Fitness Test. I am very proud of that,” Carroll said.
