AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy--Does a lack of technological skills got you down? Can’t access a website or a shared drive? What do you do next? Submit a ticket, of course!

Wait, not yet—the 31st Communications Squadron recommends a few trouble shooting actions to save you time on submitting a trouble ticket. Below are six common communication problems users can fix faster than they can say “submit a ticket.”

    1. “How do I connect to the printer?"

To map to a printer go to "Windows Explorer." In the address bar type in either “ashe-qs-001v” or “ashe-qs-002v.” The printers are listed by squadron, building number and room number. Once you find the printer you need, right click, then click "Connect." The printer will now be listed under "Devices and Printers" in the "Start" menu.

    2. “My mailbox is empty…but it says it’s full.”

To fix this problem, open Microsoft Outlook and press the “Ctrl” and “6” keys. Navigate to the folder “Sync Issues” or “Sync Issues1,” then right click and select “Empty Folder.” Select “Yes” in the popup window asking if you are sure you want to delete the folder and everything in it. This should clear any sync issues with Microsoft Outlook and clear space in your e-mail box. Doing this on a daily to weekly basis will help prevent your e-mail box from filling up with sync issue logs.

    3 . “The Proxy Server isn’t responding …”

If Outlook is working but you are unable to access webpages, the next step should be to manually input the proxy server address. To do this, open Internet Explorer and go to “Internet Options.” Click on the “Connections” tab and then choose “LAN Settings.” Under the second section labeled “Proxy Server,” ensure both boxes are checked and type in aviano.proxy.us.af.mil under the “Address” portion, and 8080 under “Port.” Once this is complete, close out of Internet Options and re-launch Internet Explorer.

    4. “I can’t get onto a shared drive.”

Denied access to a shared drive you’ve never had access to means you are not a part of the appropriate security group. To gain permissions associated with the correct security group, contact your unit Cyber Security Liaison, who centrally manages these groups. If you don’t know who your unit CSL is, contact your unit Command Support Staff.

    5. “I can’t print or scan anything.”

Can’t print items or scan to email? This one’s easy. Unplug the black box attached to the back of the printer, wait 10 seconds, then plug the printer back in. This quick reset will fix a majority of issues affecting multi-function devices.

    6. “I can’t open or send digitally signed emails.”

In Outlook click “File” in the top left corner, go to “Options,” then “Trust Center.” Click “Trust Center Settings,” then go to the “E-mail Security” tab. Next, in the “Encrypted Email” field, ensure the “Default Setting” box is not blank. If it is blank, click on the “Settings” button. Add your certificates to the “Hash” and “Encryption” algorithm, then press “OK”. The encrypted email field should be filled and the issue resolved.

If your technology games still hasn’t progressed, you can submit a trouble ticket at the Virtual Enterprise Service Desk, located on your network computer desktop. Good luck!
