(TAPA TRAINING AREA, Estonia) - Soldiers from Company A, 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division held a team leaders course July 18-22 at Tapa Training Area, Estonia.

The weeklong course focused training younger Soldiers, who will soon become team leaders and prepare them for team and squad live-fire exercises.

Soldiers from 3rd Bn., 69th Arm. Rgmt. are currently in Estonia as a part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a demonstration of continued U.S. commitment to collective security through a series of actions designed to reassure NATO allies and partners of America's dedication to enduring peace and stability in the region.

U.S. Army 1st Lt. Aaron Monkman, a platoon leader in Co. A, 3rd Bn., 69th Arm. Rgmt., said the course didn’t just focus on the infantry Soldiers.

“We want to enhance the ability of some of our attachments, like the mechanics and tankers,” said Monkman. “this will give them the opportunity to do what we do and prepare for team and squad live-fire exercises.”

The course began with weapons familiarization and continued with individual movement techniques and hand signals, talking on the radio and land-navigation.

The course finished with a culminating exercise that combined everything the Soldiers had learned.

Staff Sgt. Steven Daughtrey, a squad leader with Co. A, 3rd Bn., 69th Arm. Rgmt., said that the course is a great learning tool for the Soldiers.

“There is a lot of information being put out for the Soldiers to obtain,” said Daughtery. “I am proud of them, and this course will prepare them to lead a team during live-fire exercises.”

One of the main challenges the instructors faced during the course was teaching basic infantry skills to non-infantry Soldiers.

Sgt. 1st Class Pablo Flores, a platoon sergeant in Co. A, 3rd Bn., 69th Arm. Rgmt, said that cross training is very important in his company.

“The better the Soldiers are during cross training, the more lethal we are for accomplishing missions,” said Flores. “Mission readiness is great, and at any given time, if a Soldier has to step up to the plate, they will be ready.”
