    Marine Forces, Special Operations Command

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – The Marine Raiders of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command will welcome their new commander, Maj. Gen. Carl E. Mundy III, the sixth officer to hold the position, in a ceremony, here, Tuesday.

Mundy comes to the command with extensive experience in integrating Marines with Naval and Joint partners, having just finished his command of 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Task Force 51, responsible for amphibious operations in the Middle East theater.

Mundy’s responsibilities in his previous command included supporting coalition efforts to stabilize the embattled nation of Yemen and ensuring maritime security in the region. Additionally, he commanded Marine forces deployed to the Central Command area of operations engaged in security cooperation, crisis response and contingency operations.

The ceremony, set for 9 a.m. Tues., will mark the transfer of authority and responsibility from Maj. Gen. Joseph L. Osterman to Maj. Gen. Mundy. The senior officer presiding over the ceremony will be Gen. John M. Paxton, Jr., the 33rd assistant commandant of the Marine Corps. Osterman leaves the command after two years at its helm. Osterman’s accomplishments included the regionalization of the three Marine Raider Battalions and their support battalions, significant expansion of MARSOC’s intelligence organization and capabilities, the first deployment of a Raider-led Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force, expansion of the command’s information operations capabilities and development of the Special Operations Forces Liaison Element concept, which integrates planning and coordination between special operations and Marine Expeditionary Units.

Osterman, nominated for promotion to Lt. Gen., will next report to U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa, Fla., for service as its deputy commander.

MARSOC is the Marine Corps service component of U.S. Special Operations Command and was activated Feb. 24, 2006. Its mission is to train, organize, equip and deploy task-organized Marine special operations forces worldwide.

A roundtable interview will be conducted between members of the media and Maj. Gen. Osterman following the conclusion of the ceremony. Media interested in attending the change of command must contact the MARSOC Public Affairs Officer, Capt. Nick Mannweiler, by noon Monday. RSVPs can be sent by email to nicholas.mannweiler@socom.mil.
