The Japanese Ground Self Defense Force observed U.S Navy Corpsmen July 20, 2016 as they demonstrated lifesaving skills at Marine Corps Base Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Japan.
U.S Navy Seaman Arthur Maxwell, a corpsman with 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, said Navy Corpsmen erected a static display to show III MEF’s mobile medical capabilities.
We are open to an exchange of ideas, which helps strengthen our relationship with the Japanese Self-Defense Force,” said Maxwell.
The corpsmen began by giving a class on lifesaving skills, followed by an open question session with a group of Navy Corpsmen.
“It is important for the entire area of operations in the Pacific to have good medical assets that they could use in sea or on shore,” said Lt. Cmdr. Khristima Hoover, General Surgeon-in-Chief of Professional Services with 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
After the classes finished, sailors set up a two-level health service capability, which is a mobile operating room that allows medical personnel to treat patients in the field or at the sight of injury. Once the officers finished looking at the static display, they discussed their role in the two-level health service capability between the III MEF and the JGSDF.
“It has been a wonderful experience,” said Hoover. “They’re always extremely knowledgeable in their subject matter and they are very interested in what we are doing. It has been a very good bilateral relationship with the Japanese.”
