Rallycross drivers and their teammates received a warm welcome from Marine Corps Air Station New River June 30 as Marines gave the Red Bull Global Rallycross members a sneak peak of what life is like as a Marine.
Drivers took aim at targets on the digital battlefield at the MCAS New River Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer where they handled the M16-A4 rifle, M9 service pistol, the M2 Browning and the M240 machinegun.
"Shooting is something we don’t do very often back in Sweden," said Sebastian Eriksson, a Swedish rallycross driver. "So to be able to come here and learn from the Marines and try the simulator was awesome."
After visiting the ISMT, the drivers convoyed to Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 302 to take a private tour of the hangar and a CH-53E Super Stallion, giving the drivers a private and up close look at one of the Marine Corps’ hardest working aircraft, while allowing the rallycross teams and Marines to share their common mechanical interest.
"It’s really cool to see the drivers and teams interested in our equipment," said Sgt. Isaiah Hildreth, a crew chief instructor with HMHT 302. "It’s kind of funny because I think their cars are so cool and I forget about how impressive our aircraft are until I am around people who don’t get to experience it every day like these teams. It’s nice to be able to share some of that and be able to look at their cars and talk with the drivers."
Throughout the day drivers, their teams and Marines shared experiences, common interests in cars and aircraft while learning from each other, some learning more than aircraft statistics.
"I enjoy watching how hard Marines work," said Eriksson. "I know that we work hard to get the car ready and to do well at the races but I can see the Marines are working just as hard with everything they are doing and it is very impressive to see everything from the training course we did last year to the shooting we did today and all the hard work and effort they put into every detail. I think our race team can learn from that."
