Klein, Nichols Greet Wing as New Leaders

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, CA, UNITED STATES

    06.30.2016

Story by Senior Airman Nicole Leidholm

    60th Air Mobility Wing

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - Col. John Klein Jr., 60th Air Mobility Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Steve Nichols, recently selected to be the command chief for Travis Air Force Base, California, held commanders calls June 30 and July 1, to introduce themselves and talk about their expectations for the wing.

Klein, who has had a previous history with Travis being the vice wing commander and a squadron commander with the contingency response wing, spoke about leadership and unity within the wing.

“I believe that leadership is a condition, not a position,” said Klein. “I want to talk about leadership at all levels because when you have folks acting like leaders at all levels, it makes all of our jobs easier. The more the wing is driving together in one direction, then there is a lot of potential, but the more we are pushing forward together in the same direction, same lines of effort, the more effective we will be as a wing.”

Klein’s other priorities, expectations and values he addressed on included: The Air Force core values; taking care of your people; setting a tone of mutual respect; stewardship; accountability; standards; inspiring excellent performance; communication; respecting your people’s time; suspenses; being fit to fight; growth and balance.

Nichols, who is currently the 11th Mission Support Group superintendent at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, will take over the command chief position at Travis on Aug. 1. He came out to the base for the wing change-of-command and to introduce himself, get to know the base personnel and talk about his priorities and expectations.

“This is what I believe in: Treat everyone with dignity and respect, including yourself,” said Nichols. “Fostering teamwork; it should be one. We shouldn’t see a difference between our (Contingency Response Wing) or our Reserve partners. Together we’re stronger.”

Nichols also touched on taking action to find an answer; balance and knowing when to take a knee; communication both up and down the chain of command and watching out for your wingman.

“I’m so excited to be part of Team Travis,” said Nichols. “I can’t wait to get here. You guys are awesome and we just hope to soak up some of that awesomeness.”
