United States Military Academy at West Point

Col. Andrew S. Hanson assumed command and Command Sgt. Maj. Roderick C. Taylor assumed responsibility of the U.S. Army Garrison-West Point from Col. Landy D. Dunham and Command Sgt. Maj. Joel D. Crawford July 7 at Eisenhower Hall in West Point, N.Y.

Hanson is a Special Forces officer who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1994 and Taylor is Quartermaster.

Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen, Jr., Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy, said the garrison is a vital part to the culture of excellence that the U.S. Military Academy upholds.

“West Point is truly a community because of their hard work,” Caslen said of the outgoing command team. “Landy Dunham and Command Sgt. Maj. Crawford have been an amazing team and their efforts have had a direct impact on the incredible reputation West Point enjoys throughout the Army.”

Caslen went on to welcome the new command team of Hanson and Taylor.

“We’re thrilled to have you both here and look forward to working with you as you lead this great installation to continued excellence and even greater success,” Caslen said.

Davis D. Tindoll, Jr., the director of U.S. Army Installation Management Command (IMCOM)-Atlantic, said the garrison is the centerpiece of IMCOM and its leaders are integral to its success.

“Our Army does not train its officers and noncommissioned officers to become garrison commanders and garrison command sergeants major, but it does develop leaders,” Tindoll said. “Leaders who are capable, innovative and motivated to handle the challenges, the demands, of this type of command, and that’s exactly how I would describe Col. Dunham and Command Sgt. Maj. Crawford.”

Tindoll said both Hanson and Taylor bring extensive experience to their new positions.

“I am confident that with your demonstrated leadership, you will build on the successes of your predecessors,” Tindoll told them. “The challenges will be many, but I’m confident that you will bring energy and excellence to the garrison and this installation.”

Dunham said serving at West Point was the greatest honor of his and Crawford’s military careers and ensured spectators that Hanson was the right man for the job.

“My good friend Andy, if the Army had asked me to pick my successor, I have no doubt that I would have picked you,” Dunham said to Hanson. “You, Jackie, Command Sgt. Maj. Taylor and Gloria are going to make an incredible command team. Just lead from the front and always trust and empower your incredible teammates.”

In turn, Hanson promised to keep Dunham’s momentum going.

“I’ll continue to strengthen the bonds that Landy created between the military academy and garrison so we effectively and efficiently meet your vision and mission,” Hanson said.

Hanson and Taylor will lead 1,157 civilian employees and 110 Soldiers of the U.S. Army Garrison-West Point.

“I will always be available and accessible and I look forward to the next few years of serving you, I say these words specifically, that I am here to serve you, and allow you to reach your full potential in the conduct and accomplishment of our duties,” said Hanson.

Dunham’s next assignment is in Washington D.C. and Crawford is retiring after 30 years of distinguished service.
