Every day meteorological and oceanographic analyst forecaster Marines observe weather conditions in order to support training missions on Marine Corps Air Station New River.

Safety is the top priority with METOC, as they keep a watchful eye on weather forecasts and reports, ensuring personnel and aircraft can continue training.

“Without us, training couldn’t safely continue,” said Cpl. Breann Gonzalez, meteorological forecaster with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “We provide meteorological assistance to pilots, tenant organizations and transient aircrew.”

METOC is a key component to flight line operations and forecasters provide crucial data of weather conditions such as turbulence, precipitation or icing.

“The biggest thing we deal with at the station is briefs to pilots,” said Sgt. Hillary Hanner, meteorological forecaster with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “Letting them know about turbulence, icing, things of that nature in the area and just keeping them safe.”

In addition to relaying information to pilots, METOC provides reports to local commands.

“We pass information to commanders to let them know if it’s safe for their Marines to continue training and to make sure they will get back safely,” said Hanner.
