Col. Derrick R. Heyl assumed command of Headquarters Battalion, Marine Forces Reserve, during a change of command ceremony held at Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans, July 1, 2016.

Heyl replaced Col. Steven G. Godinho, who will retire this month, after 24 years of honorable service to the Marine Corps. Godinho had served as the commanding officer of Headquarters Battalion since June 2014.

“The Marines of Headquarters Battalion have been awe-inspiring,” Godinho said. “I held my last formation this morning. We awarded one Marine, promoted two others, the band played and I knew it was going to be tough to leave. I am just so proud to have the opportunity to have this position.”

After the passing of the colors, Lt. Gen. Rex C. McMillian presented Godinho with the Legion of Merit for his service with Headquarters Battalion.

“I really want to thank him for leading these Marines and getting them ready to fight tonight,” McMillian said during the ceremony.

In his first speech as the new commanding officer, Heyl thanked the crowd for their presence and expressed his commitment to the battalion, MARFORRES and the Marine Corps.

“The first thing I am going to care about is the mission of Headquarters Battalion,” Heyl said. “In turn, I’m going to care about the Marines, Sailors, and civilians who work here.”
