    Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow

Lieutenant General Michael Dana, deputy commandant, Installations and Logistics, visited Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., June 14, to personally congratulate MCLB for being awarded the prestigious Commander-in-Chief 's Award for Installation Excellence.

Dana first met with Col. Sekou Karega, commanding officer, MCLBB, for a quick briefing at command headquarters, before going on a tour of the base.

The deputy commandant and Karega then took a walking tour of Warehouse 5 where goods and materiel are prepared to be shipped out to Department of Defense concerns around the world.

Dana walked among the aisles of racks which are loaded with everything from combat boots and computer mainframes to cold weather gear and computerized copy machines. He praised the work the employees of the Defense Logistics Agency performed at MCLBB.

“I’m very impressed. DLA runs a world-class organization,” Dana said. “The DLA is very helpful to the Marine Corps. I like their best practices, and we’re going to adopt same.”

The tour also included a stop at neighboring Warehouse 7 where equipment is received at MCLBB before being sent on to nearby storage facilities.

“I’ve been to (MCLB) Barstow three times, but I wanted to visit the DLA facility personally because of the great work they do,” Dana said.

From there, the lieutenant general and his entourage took a windshield tour of the foreign military sales (FMS) lots near the rear gate of the Nebo facility before heading out to the Yermo Annex of MCLBB.

Dana was met by Lt. Col. Timothy A. Silkowski, director, Fleet Support Division, and took part in a rolling tour of FSD facilities.

A special stop at the Security Warehouse drew comments of wonder and amazement about the variety of materials stored in that secure facility, some dating back decades to much earlier conflicts.

Dana then headed to Production Plant Barstow where he had an up close look at Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles and Light Armored Vehicles typically repaired and tested at the facility.

During each stop of his tour, Dana took time to praise the various departments and areas for their contributions to winning the Installation Excellence award.
