NOVO SELO, Bulgaria – Brig. Gen. Donald L. Johnson, the Assistant Adjutant General for the Tennessee Air National Guard, visited Novo Selo Training Area, a military base in Bulgaria, June 8, 2016 in order to advance Operation Resolute Castle. He reviewed construction efforts by the 194th Engineer Brigade and the construction plan for the remainder of the operation.

The 194th Engineer Brigade, Tennessee Army National Guard, currently holds command over Operation Resolute Castle. In recent years, NATO and the United States have both focused efforts on expanding their relationships with countries in Eastern Europe through joint military exercises. This series of exercises, under Operation Atlantic Resolve, hopes to promote regional security and embolden local economies. Unlike other Atlantic Resolve exercises, Resolute Castle focuses on the improvement of Eastern European military infrastructure by expanding military bases.

Resolute Castle is an opportunity for individual soldiers to flourish. Sgt. Justin Marlow, a survey and design technician for the 194th Engineer Brigade, has been in charge of a significant amount of planning and is involved in daily quality control checks on the construction.

During Johnson’s visit, Marlow gave a presentation on the progress that’s been made.

“I briefed Brigadier General Johnson on the design of the ammunition holding area. The ammunition holding area will allow us to support larger units, allowing them to more effectively train,” stated Sgt. Marlow, adding, “It was good seeing leadership from the home state showing support for our efforts here in Bulgaria.”

As a token of gratitude for the presentation, Johnson presented Marlow with a Commander’s Coin. “It was an honor to receive a coin from someone of his position,” said Marlow.

It is unusual for a unit from the National Guard to have command of such a large operation. This opportunity is made possible by the United States Army’s State Partnership Program, which partners the National Guard units of each state with a foreign country. The intention of the program is to add depth to the United State Military’s relationships with nations abroad. Under this program, the state of Tennessee and the country of Bulgaria have been partners for more than two decades.

Marlow said Resolute Castle, “allows us the chance for a better partnership with the Bulgarians and our State Partnership Program.”
