Rear Adm. David Kriete, from Brooklyn, New York, was properly relieved by Rear Adm. John Tammen, from Washington Township, Washington, during the formal ceremony held at Deterrent Park.
“It has truly been an honor to lead the men and women of Submarine Group 9 for the past two years,” said Kriete. “I believe passionately in our mission and I believe passionately in our Sailors, so I can only hope those passions have had a positive effect here in Bangor.”
Kriete assumed command of COMSUBGRU-9 on July 11, 2014. His next assignment will be at the National Security Council in Washington, D.C. where he will serve as Director, Strategic Capabilities Policy.
“Naval Base Kitsap is unique in that it’s the only base where all three types of submarines are based: Ballistic Missile Submarines, Guided Cruise Missile Submarines and Fast Attack Submarines,” said Kriete. “In particular the mission of deploying Ballistic missile submarines on strategic deterrent patrols can only be done from two bases, Bangor and Kings Bay, Georgia.”
During Kriete’s tenure, two of the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730) and USS Alabama (SSBN 731), celebrated 30-years of service. Also, the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) completed a 40-month engineered refueling overhaul and returned to strategic service, and the Ohio-class guided missile submarine USS Michigan (SSGN 727) returned to home after being forward deployed for more than 20 months.
“Our Sailors are the one advantage we will always maintain over any adversary, more important than stealth, firepower or numbers of ships,” said Kriete. “They are the truly the most valuable players on our team.”
Tammen comes to COMSUBGRU-9 from U.S. Strategic Command where he served as deputy director of Plans and Policy. His previous command tours include the Ohio-class guided missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729) and Submarine Squadron 19.
“The ballistic and guided missile submarines here in the Pacific Northwest play a crucial role,” said Tammen. “It is with knowledge of these requirements that I humbly embrace the responsibility that comes with this assignment.”
Subordinate to COMSUBPAC, Commander, Submarine Group Nine exercises administrative command and control authority for assigned Trident fleet ballistic and cruise missile submarines and subordinate commands and units in the Pacific Northwest. Subordinate commands include Submarine Squadrons 17 and 19 and Naval Submarine Support Center, Bangor.
