TAPA, Estonia -- Senior Army leaders gathered in the Tapa Army Base dining facility, for a cake-cutting ceremony in celebration of the Army's 241st birthday, during Saber Strike 16, here on June 14, 2015.

PV2 Dameon Vess, a cannon crewmember assigned to the Field Artillery Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment and Brigadier General Jeffrey P. Kramer, Deputy Commander of the 29th Infantry Division both participated in cutting the cake with a long saber.

Vess, a native of Weaverville, Calif. Said he never thought he’d be cutting a cake with a one-star general at 18-years old.

“I feel excited about today because it’s a new memory and cool thing that I get to do during my life,” Vess said. “Traveling throughout eastern Europe has also been a big step.”

U.S. Army Chaplain (Cpt.) Patrice Mbo, assigned to Field Artillery Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment started the celebration with an invocation for the men and women who serve.

“May we continue to uphold the Army traditions we celebrate and live up to the standards of excellence and professionalism that our nation has come to expect.”

Brig. Gen Kramer said having the honor to serve in an institution with 241 years of history gives soldiers pride.

“I think it shows the Army’s pride in that we are older than our nation and have even greater pride being older than all the other armed forces in the United States.”

The ceremony concluded with a video presentation of an old Army recruiting commercial called “We Were There” followed by “The Army Song”.

Two hundred and forty-one years ago, the Army was established to defend the United States. From the Revolutionary War to the Global War on Terror, the nation’s Soldiers remain Army Strong with a deep commitment to the Army’s core values and beliefs. This 241th birthday celebrates America’s Army – soldiers, families and civilians – who are achieving a level of excellence that is truly Army Strong both here and abroad.
