CAMP ALLEN ELEMENTARY, NORFOLK, Va. – Marines and sailors from U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command volunteered to support the Camp Allen Elementary School Field Meet, June 10.
The purpose of this annual event is to get the kids outside to have fun and exercise before the official start of summer vacation. The Marines and sailors spent the day with the children of different grade levels doing things like throwing footballs, egg-on-a-spoon relay races, tug-of-war, and racing through bouncy houses.
For the volunteers, this was a chance to show the kids that they’re here to support them and that they care.
“I love volunteering because you get to help other people and when you come out here, you get to interact with kids,” said Staff Sgt. Daisy Romero, a MARFORCOM G-4 logistics staff Non Commissioned Officer. “They get to see you and ask questions about the Marine Corps and about your job. If I can teach them something or inspire them to do something, then I feel that I’m doing my job as a volunteer.”
The field meet is one of many events held throughout the year for the kids and for Marines, sailors, and civilians to volunteer. Some events that have been held include the Father-Daughter Dance, the Mother-Son Dance, Donuts for Dads, and trips to the zoo.
“I like helping other people’s kids and anyone who needs help, that’s why I volunteer,” said Staff Sgt. Elton Rogers, MARFORCOM S-4 supply chief. “I’m very appreciated of the Marines and sailors who took the time to come out and show the kids that we care about them.”
“I love kids and I love volunteering so I thought this was a good thing to get out and do,” said Lance Cpl. Kristine Avalos, an administration specialist with Headquarters and Service Battalion, MARFORCOM.
