TRENTON, N.J. – Approximately 75 Army recruits swore the oath of enlistment during an Army Birthday celebration here June 11.

The event was hosted by the U.S. Army Mid-Atlantic Recruiting Battalion outside the city’s state house.

“This is one of the most important decisions any of these young men and women will make in their lives,” said Maj. Gen. Margaret W. Boor, commanding general of the Army Reserve’s 99th Regional Support Command headquartered at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

Boor administered the oath of enlistment to these six-dozen volunteers who will go on to become tomorrow’s leaders in the Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard.

“I encourage you to recognize the importance of swearing an oath,” said Rory Wells, assistant prosecutor from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and a former Marine. “The words that you speak when you swear an oath are not a temporary act – they become a part of your history.”

Recounting the U.S. Army’s history was Trenton Mayor Eric Jackson, who read the Flag Act of 1777 as well as a Flag Day proclamation in recognition of the annual joint celebration of the Army Birthday and Flag Day on June 14.

“Two-hundred forty-one years ago, our nation’s leaders established a Continental Army,” Jackson said. “Today, the Army is the strategic land power of the Joint Force, called upon to protect, shape and win against our adversaries.”
