    William Beaumont Army Medical Center

William Beaumont Army Medical Center was recently recognized as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Care facility for excellence in lactation care.
The IBCLC Care Award also recognizes the dedicated lactation consultant support positions and a dedicated lactation program available at the hospital. William Beaumont Army Medical Center is the second hospital in the region to receive this recognition by the IBCLC, which highlights the hospital’s efforts toward accreditation as a Baby-Friendly facility.
“This is a great effort,” said Col. John A. Smyrski III, commander, WBAMC. “This is a great indication that we’re pointing in the right direction.”
Earlier this year the facility was designated a Texas Mother-Friendly Worksite meaning the hospital supports breastfeeding employees by providing the privacy and flexibility to express and store breast milk.
According to the Labor and Delivery staff, WBAMC, the IBCLC Care award was an accomplishment that would not have been possible if it wasn't for the efforts of the Breastfeeding Task Force.
"It is a good thing for moms, for babies and for our communities because we're promoting something natural and economically sound," said Maj. Juliana Luciano, the officer in charge of labor and delivery.
The hospital is currently in the dissemination phase of the 4-D Pathway to Baby-Friendly Designation, which concentrates on staff training, data collection and patient education.
The hospital was also recently recognized for discontinuing formula company marketing by promoting natural health rather than formula feeding.
According to the International Lactation Consultant Association, the IBCLC Care Award highlights efforts to help mothers get off to a good start with breastfeeding, and to support them.
Members of the Breastfeeding Task Force include Lt. Col. Cattleya Born, Maj. Melissa Benson, Capt. Stefanie Schwarz, Maj. Danielle Molinar, Jennifer Hesselberth, Ofelia O’Donnell and Maj. Kimberly Rosenbaum.
