“First time I have had to work a language barrier and I don’t think it’s too bad, because English is widely known second language here,” said Bassett.
Bassett and a number other soldiers from her unit as well as a dozen Airman from the 148th and 133rd Civil Engineering Squadron have come to Karlovec, Croatia to help remodel a primary school in need of a repair.
Nineteen-year-old Bassett works as a Electrician Apprentice with her father’s company Cal-Tex Electric based out of Prior Lake, Minn.
“When I joined the recruiter got my number some how, but I listened to what he offer me” said Bassett. “My mom was pissed because I didn’t talk to her about it at all, it just came up – I kind of did it impulsively.”
The decision turned out to be a great benefit to her to the point that she is thinking of making the Army a career.
I like the military, but I hope to be able to do something with helicopters and maybe even go Airborne, said Bassett.
Bassett has a supportive family with her newfound passion for a career in the military. She has five younger siblings ranging five to eight years in age.
“I think my younger brother is just like me, and I think he will join someday,” said Bassett.
Croatia’s State Partnership with Minnesota is going on 20 years strong of humanitarian and civic assistance missions and other relationship building events. The Minnesota National Guard has been tasked to provide engineering and construction support to the Primary Dubovac School in Karlovac, Croatia.
“I love building stuff,” said Bassett “I enjoy watching a project start from nothing and watch it grow from there.”
The project consists of a complete remodel of the kitchen, staff bathroom and locker area in the school and the unit plans to be done with the project before the fourth of July.
