GRENVILLE, Grenada - Soldiers from the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Florida Army National Guard train members of the Grenada Special Service Unit during Tradewinds 2016, June 4-14.
Tradewinds 2016 is a joint combined exercise conducted in conjunction with partner nations to enhance the collective abilities of defense forces and constabularies to counter transnational organized crime and to conduct humanitarian/disaster relief operations.
The Florida Guardsmen are providing training on room-clearing, fundamentals of marksmanship, hands on training at the range, classroom presentations about military police and more.
“It’s an honor to be here and train them,” said Sgt. 1st Class Anthony Rodriquez, a military police with the 53rd IBCT. “(The Grenadians) are very resilient and very eager for the training.”
The training was instructed by approximately 10 members of the 53rd IBCT based off input from the key leaders of the Grenada Special Service Unit.
“The best way to train is hands on like we are doing here,” said Rodriquez. “They are able to learn and do it firsthand themselves.”
The Soldiers are showing them U.S. Army tactics, techniques and procedures that they can bring back to their own team.
“Their Soldiers are surpassing expectations,” said Capt. Christopher Bertz, the provost marshall of the 53rd IBCT. “They are trained, motivated to learn, and are picking up the information we are teaching them very fast. They are making great improvements with the training.”
As the Grenada Special Service Unit and the Florida Army National Guard Soldiers continue to train during the exercise, they are also building relationships among individuals and countries.
