AUSTIN, Texas - Navy recruiters, Navy Special Warfare/Operations teams, Navy Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Tours, and a social media team made their presence known at the 2016 ESPN Summer X Games held at the Circuit of the Americas, June 2 - 5.

Thousands of attendees visited the America's Navy display and took the opportunity to view a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, don an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) suit, operate EOD robots, pose with the Navy's chalk art, operate robotics modules and the Virtual SeaPerch Challenge with the Oculus., and participate in the Warrior Challenge Pull-up Competition to win a custom skate deck.

Participants included Sailors from Navy Recruiting District San Antonio (NRD), Navy Recruiting Command's Marketing and Advertising Department and Warrior Challenge Program Office, EOD Training and Evaluation Unit-2 (EODTEU-2), EOD Mobile Unit 12 (EODMU-12), EOD Expeditionary Support Unit-2 (EODESU-2), Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron-3 (HSC-3), U.S. Navy Parachute Demonstration Team (Leap Frogs), and NAVSEA Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) .

The Warrior Challenge, one of the main events of America's Navy at X Games, gave the opportunity for men, women and children to demonstrate their strength and endurance by performing maximum pull-ups.

“We had hundreds of people test their strength,” said Lt. Cmdr. Allen Owens, who is assigned to Navy Recruiting Command’s Marketing and Advertising Department. “We had small children to older adults compete daily for a skate deck.”

“The Warrior Challenge allows us to meet with people who are in a high state of fitness and provides us the opportunity to engage with those individuals regarding some of our special warfare/special operations career fields.” said the Frankfort, Ill. native.

According to Owens, the Navy attends X Games to showcase the great things the Navy does for the country and to spread awareness of America’s Navy, to include opportunities within the Navy.

During the first day of X Games, the Leap Frogs took to the air, jumping from 6,000 feet into the Flat Track area of the Circuit of the Americas.

On day two of the X Games, seven-time medalist Morgan Wade visited the Navy display and signed autographs to include participating in the Warrior Challenge.

According to Cmdr. Karen Muntean, commanding officer of NRD San Antonio, X-Games allowed the unique opportunity for recruiters to engage with thousands of people at a single event.

“Being a part of X Games is important and valuable to the NRD because it provides us an environment for us spread Navy Awareness,” said Muntean, a native of Calhoun, Tenn. “X Games provides a diverse market for recruiters to engage with young people and provide them information on life in the Navy and about the various career opportunities the Navy has to offer.”

“We find that those who visit the Navy display are interested in service, travel, fitness, and enjoying life,” said Muntean, who was attending her second X Games Austin.

The 2016 X Games Austin ends a three-year run for X Games in the Lone Star State.
