FORT STEWART, Ga. – Lt. Col. Scott Sentell, outgoing commander of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, transferred authority to Lt. Col. Robert Wisham, with a change of command ceremony at Fort Stewart, Georgia, June 1.
“Leadership is based off of the Soldiers that you have in your formation,” Sentell said. “You trust the Soldiers you have and provide the leadership to get them where they need to be. Give them intent and allow them to execute.”
Sentell spoke about what he enjoyed most during his time with the battalion and how he was impressed by the Soldiers advancement.
“The capstone of what I liked most during my time as a squadron commander for 6-8 Cav., was being able to talk to Soldiers on a daily basis and seeing them progress in their training and get better.” Sentell said.
The event accentuated change of command and the importance of the ceremony bringing understanding of leadership transition to the Soldiers.
“Change of command is a transfer of authority from one individual to the next,” said Cpt. Abdullah Clark, commander of Troop C, 6-8 Cav. “The ceremony is important because it allows every Soldier in the organization to see the new commander and know who he is when they see him around. It is a procedure by Army regulation and it is the definitive mark of transfer of authority, both physically and psychologically.”
Sentell’s service and commitment to his squadron was acknowledged during the ceremony.
“Sentell’s leadership is something I would describe as highly effective,” said Clark. “He has a remarkable ability to see through every problem and find the best solution. He allows commanders under him to be creative and meet his intent.”
Clark said, the best thing he liked about Sentell was his positive and amicable nature saying he was approachable and genuine.
“I have been here for about six months and in that short time I have never been more impressed with a battalion/squadron level commander,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Oliver of 6-8 Cav. “His care for the Soldiers and ability to understand the mission and get things done has been a tremendous help to the squadron. I would not change it for the world, I think he is one of the best.”
Sentell’s wife Randi was also recognized for supporting her husband and the battalion during his service with the squadron.
“Scott and Randi, you both should leave here today with your heads held high as you left this battalion better than you received it, the hallmark of true professionals,” said Col. Thomas Gukeisen, commander of 2nd IBCT.
Sentell left a few words of advice for the Soldiers and welcomed the incoming commander and his family to the unit.
“My advice to Soldiers is to focus on getting the job done, do not worry about who gets the credit, be a blue collar organization and take pride in mission accomplishment,” Sentell said. “To the newest Mustangs, Jay, Heather and the Wisham family, congratulations on taking command.”
Wisham spoke to his new squadron and showed appreciation. He acknowledged Sentell and Randi, as well as the battalion for the warm welcome he received.
“Thank you Scott and Randi for bringing us into the Mustang team with open arms,” Wisham said. “To my wife, Heather, and son, Parker, I would not be here without you guys. I am humbled and honored to be given the opportunity to lead the Soldiers of 6-8 Cav.”
