FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii – Maj. Gen. Mark J. O’Neil, Chief of Staff, U. S. Army Pacific, was honored during a Flying "V" ceremony held at historic Palm Circle, Fort Shafter, Hawaii, June 2.
The Flying "V" ceremony traditionally welcomes or honors senior Army officials when they assume duties or depart from USARPAC. The "V" refers to the way the colors are posted during the ceremony, which is V-shaped.
Fifteen of USARPAC's subordinate and theater-enabling commands were represented on the parade field by Soldiers bearing the organizational colors and command teams.
O'Neil joins USARPAC following his assignment as Deputy Commanding General, Combined Arms Center – Training, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Prior assignments include Deputy Commanding General - Operations, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York, as well as Executive Officer to The Chief of Staff, United States Army.
U.S. Army Pacific commanding general, Gen. Robert B. Brown, officiated the ceremony and addressed O'Neil's importance to USARPAC and the impact he expects him to have on the command.
"The Chief of Staff is the pulse of the organization. He is the cog that makes this well-oiled machine run," said Brown. "I will look to Mark to manage the staff and run the day-to-day operations for the largest Service Component Command in the Army; and I’m confident he is up to the task."
He stressed how O'Neil brings "a wealth of knowledge, experience, and talent to this organization" and how excited he is to have O'Neil, who served with him at Fort Leavenworth.
O'Neil thanked Brown for the kind words, adding that he has been "an admirer of USARPAC from afar."
"The complex challenges of this region and the innovation approach of this command to address those challenges are quite remarkable," said O'Neil. "I am excited to come here not only to see firsthand, but to have hands on, in the process."
Brown finished by welcoming O'Neil and his family to USARPAC and stated how glad he is that he will be part of the command.
"Thank you Team O’Neil, for your continued service to the Nation, and welcome to the USARPAC “One Team” OHANA. This will be a great assignment and we are fortunate to have you with us," Brown said.
