6/3/2016 - WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio -- Honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in combat, the 88th Security Forces Squadron Installation conducted National Police Week during the week of May 15 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

"We celebrate National Police Week to give awareness, show our capabilities and appreciation for the fallen who have put their lives on the line," said Tech. Sgt. Randell Rosado 88th Security Forces Squadron Installation NCO in Charge for Antiterrorism office.

The various events held during National Police Week at Wright-Patterson AFB ranged from a static weapons display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, a golf tournament fundraiser at Twin Base golf club, and a memorial ruck march at the Rod and Gun Club.

Maj. David Celeste, SFS commander, explained the events for National Police Week. He emphasized Air Force core values -- integrity, service before self and excellence in all we do. Celeste reflected on those words and how he feels they relate to law enforcement.

"That badge we walk around with has a lot of power, responsibility," said Celeste. "When that badge walks into the room, the public expects an honest, competent professional, and we strive to live up to those expectations."

Celeste highlighted those SFS members who have made the ultimate sacrifice, adding that guest speaker Chris Herwick -- mother of fallen defender Staff Sgt. Travis Griffin who lost his life in Baghdad, Iraq, April 3, 2008 -- knows the meaning of sacrifice. The Griffin Memorial Scholarship was established in his name.

The SFS raised approximately $2,000 from the golf tournament with proceeds going to Concerns of Police Survivors, C.O.P.S. and the Defender's Association, which hosted the fundraiser during National Police Week.

Celeste thanked the law enforcement departments for their time and support to partake in National Police Week. Those representing were Clark County Sheriff, Beavercreek Police Department, Riverside Police Department, Dayton Police Department, the local U.S. Marine Corps battalion, U.S. Marshals, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Air Force Office of Special Investigation and Air Force SFS.

"The SFS events for National Police Week are important because it gives us an opportunity to interact with the community," said Tech. Sgt. Burt Perry, NCO in Charge of Police Services. "We are here to remind the public, we are here for them -- to serve and protect."

In 1962, Congress and President Kennedy signed a bill in legislation, recognizing May 15 as National Police Week to honor law enforcement agencies around the nation who consistently on a day in and day out basis do their best to live up to the public's expectations.
