BALTIMORE – During an overcasted day trying to match the mood of the occasion, Veterans, current military and civilians gathered to observe Memorial Day at the Maryland Korean War Memorial in Baltimore May 30.
Col. Marty L. Muchow, deputy commander for operations of the 20th Chemical Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives Command, was the keynote speaker for the event. During his speech he exhorted the crowd to take a few minutes to remember the fallen in between family gatherings.
“Today, is both a somber day and a day to rejoice, but most of all it is a day to tell the stories of the Soldiers from battlefields past so the Soldiers of yesterday and today are never forgotten,” said Muchow. “It is important we do not forget the stories of this nation; that we pass them on to our children.”
Escorted to the center of the memorial by bagpipers, Muchow, along with Commander Earl A. House, retired Navy veteran, laid the wreath as is traditionally done during this type of ceremony.
The wreath was laid in front of the wall where 527 Marylanders, missing or killed during the Korean War, have their names inscribed as a reminder of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Muchow went on to add, “Memorial Day is not about honoring veterans, it is about honoring those who lost their lives.”
The ceremony ended with a symbolic roll call of fallen members.
