NEW YORK (May 26, 2016) – U.S. Navy Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen invited citizens of New York City and the tri-state area to tour their ships as part of Fleet Week New York (FWNY) 2016, May 26.

Ships were open to the general public and gave sea service members an opportunity to interact with local residents, and demonstrate the capabilities of the today’s maritime sea services.

“It’s my first Fleet Week and I’m so happy I did a tour,” said Brianna Farrell, a Suffolk County, New York resident. “My dad was Navy, so actually seeing a ship is a lot different than hearing about it. It’s an eye-opening experience.”

It is estimated that nearly 4,500 sea service members are participating in the weeklong event.

“The tours have been good and there’s a lot of smiling faces on the ship,” said Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Eric Bryant, assigned to USS Bataan (LHD 5). “It’s all about giving back and showing people what we do.”

“Interacting with the people of New York … there’s a certain energy that you can't beat anywhere else,” said Marine 1st Lt. Thomas Dioguardi, assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines. “The biggest thing is that people don’t get a lot of exposure to what these service men and women do. My favorite thing is seeing my Marines out here interacting with the people that they protect and serve. It’s key for them to build that relationship with the public.”

Ships will be available for public tours in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island throughout the week. Service members will also participate in a wide range of events, including community service projects, school visits, re-enlistment ceremonies, and more.

FWNY, now in its 28th year, is the city's time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today's maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
