    Naval Base Kitsap

    Members and guests of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), Kitsap Chapter, honored a select group of local service members during the 41st Annual Armed Forces Day luncheon at the Bremerton Elks Lodge on May 20.

    Five Navy and Coast Guard junior officers, accompanied by their respective commanders, were awarded for their outstanding performances of duty and exemplary contributions to the nation, their services, and their communities.

    Joining in the celebration was Frank Mattausch, 98, a Pearl Harbor survivor who was assigned to Wheeler Army Airfield, Hawaii at the time of the attack. He chatted with the junior officers, their commanders and luncheon attendees sharing his stories and experiences.

    The awardees spanned from various commands on Naval Base Kitsap (NBK):

    • Lt. Cmdr. Crystal Miller, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF)
    • Lt. Eduardo Castellanos, Naval Supply (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Supply Center Puget Sound
    • Lt. Stephany Daniell, Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB)
    • Lt. j.g. Mallory Smith, NBK
    • U.S. Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Tahnee Zaccano, Maritime Force Protection

    Rear Adm. Jeffrey Ruth, Commander, Navy Region Northwest was the keynote speaker where he addressed the Navy maritime strategy.

    Capt. Tom Zwolfer, NBK commanding officer, and Smith’s accompanying commander, congratulated her on the award: “Thank you for operating at a level well above expectations. Your efforts have significantly improved NBK’s support to the fleet, fight, and family.”
