PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. — Staff noncommissioned officers in the Tri-Command area graduated the Career Course Seminar Distance Education Program May 25, 2016, aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.

The Career Course Seminar Distance Education Program is a 15-week online program that includes weekly meetings and assignments. The program allows staff sergeants unable to attend the Staff NCO Academy Career Course to attend a professional military education course that fulfills the resident course promotion requirement.

“This program is very similar to an online college program,” said Christopher Marvin, the regional chief instructor for enlisted professional military education for the Southeast region. “It’s different than what most Marines are used to. There’s no PowerPoint lecture, and a good deal of what the (student) learns is through their reading assignments and interaction with each other throughout the seminar.”

Students are assessed through quizzes, short writing assignments and seminar participation both on site and online. They learned professional communication, expeditionary operations, professional military ethics, warfighting, planning and leadership development.

“Being able to do the course work on your own helped a lot,” said Staff Sgt. Clifford Yeoman, a seminar participant and marksmanship instructor on Parris Island. “The coursework brought back a lot of what I had already learned throughout my time in the Marine Corps and honed my communication skills with my junior Marines.”

Starting Oct.1, 2016, all staff sergeants will be required to attend either the Staff NCO Academy Career Course or this Career Course Seminar Distance Education Program to be eligible for promotion.

“Commands benefit from this program because they aren’t losing that staff sergeant for a few months to go elsewhere for a class, while saving money in the process,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. Michael Earwood, an instructor for the program.

The next Tri-Command career course seminar is scheduled to begin June 13, 2016.
