“I didn’t promise you a rose garden,” it’s a phrase that Marines hear in various different forms from the moment they enlist into the Marine Corps. For Staff Sergeant Kimberly Neal, Station Commander for Recruiting Substation Birmingham, Recruiting Station Montgomery, this is her favorite quote to live by.
“Every day isn’t going to be peachy, but you have to take the good with the bad and keep pushing to a brighter day,” Neal said.
Neal was recruited from RS Nashville and attended recruit training in June of 1996.
Neal said that she always knew that she was going to join a branch of the military, but didn’t know until her senior year of high school that it would be the Marine Corps. She continued on to say that she was from a small town and wanted to get away and experience more, both good and bad.
“I have taken my good experiences with the bad in the Marine Corps and the good outweigh the bad,” Neal said. “I am a better person today because of the Marine Corps, I have come a long way and I thank the Corps for that. I have also learned some very useful skills that I can someday carry over to the civilian sector.”
Neal said for anyone who is thinking about joining the Marine Corps that it is nowhere near easy, but if you don’t give up on the Corps then it’s not going to let you down. You just have to be willing to put in the work.
